We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Oman.
We recognize that the Sultanate of Oman is not simply a country of geopolitical importance within the Strait of Hormuz region but also is increasingly known internationally for its friendly relationships with neighboring countries, especially its keen cooperation with other GCC member states. Marubeni has positioned Oman as one of our priority countries, with our executives making frequent visits including a recent visit by our company president and CEO, Masumi Kakinoki, to meet with His Excellency Salim Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, and His Excellency Abdulsalam Al Murshidi, President of Oman Investment Authority (OIA)
and CEO Kakinoki
Marubeni first opened a liaison office in Muscat in 1982, and in the 40 years since has developed business centering around the trade of crude oil and development of social infrastructure in order to contribute to the economic development of Oman. In particular, our Sur Natural Gas-Fired Power Project (2,000MW) is the largest power plant in Oman. We entered into a 15-year power purchase agreement with the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) in 2014 and continue to provide them with electricity. Additionally, Oman’s first large-scale solar power project, the Amin Solar Power Project (105MW) began selling electricity to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) from 2020 for a period of 23 years. Through these projects, which are both operating efficiently, we hope to not only contribute to the safe and stable supply of electricity within Oman as well the improvement of maintenance technology, but also contribute to Omani society through the creation of local employment opportunities for the people of Oman.
In recent years, with global trends toward a decarbonized society, Oman, which was historically highly dependent on industries related to oil and natural gas, has boldly taken on the challenge to diversify its green businesses and industry based on the “Oman Vision 2040.”
Marubeni is also aiming to become a green “top-runner” by strengthening our green business activities, including our businesses in renewable energy, forestry and afforestation that we have developed over many years. As such, we are eager to collaborate in the decarbonization businesses that Oman is promoting, including green hydrogen and green ammonia, to further contribute to the Sultanate of Oman toward the future.
