I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations on the 50th anniversary of Japan-Oman relations.
Oman achieved tremendous economic growth in the years since 1970 under the administration of His Late Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said. Furthermore, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has been steadily moving the country forward based on the Oman 2040 Vision which he has laid out. I commend Their Majesties for their foresight and leadership. In the 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Oman and Japan, a strong cooperative relationship has blossomed through a range of political, economic, and cultural exchanges. I am confident that the relationship between our two countries will continue to deepen alongside the development of the both countries.
Our company opened an office in Oman in 1981 and started our first crude oil trading business. Through various businesses, we have forged a strong relationship with Oman, including with its government. When the Omani Government launched Oman LNG, the country’s first LNG business, in the early 1990s, our many years of experience in natural gas business were highly regarded and thus led to our participating in the project. Later, in 2005, we participated in Oman’s second LNG project, Qalhat LNG. To date, we are continuing to manage the project jointly with the Omani Government as a business partner. We feel honored to have been involved for many years in a business of such importance to the Sultanate of Oman.
I myself have visited Oman on several occasions during my time overseeing our Middle East and Central Asia businesses, and I strongly felt Oman’s potential for economic and social development. Oman being located just outside the Strait of Hormuz also makes it a key trading point facing the Indian Ocean. We expect that in the future Oman, with its geographical advantage and abundance of renewable energy sources, will play an important role in supplying next-generation energy including clean hydrogen and ammonia. I sincerely hope that the cooperative relationship between our two countries will also be leveraged in this area.
On behalf of Mitsubishi Corporation, we would be pleased to continue to be a partner of Oman going forward.
